A Pig's Tale: Pig Named Six Seven Pardoned by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Annually, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
