An informant has revealed a parliamentary probe that British authorities left behind confidential equipment allowing the militant group to track down local individuals who collaborated with international military.

Data Breach Puts Numerous in Danger

The whistleblower, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the security lapse were instructed to relocate and change their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.

Lawmakers are looking into the Conservative government's management of a serious breach of private information affecting approximately 19k Afghans who had applied to move to Britain to avoid the Taliban.

How the Leak Happened

A spreadsheet with confidential details, comprising names, phone numbers and sometimes household data, was mistakenly released by an official working at British military command in last year.

The leak came to light months later, when the names of several individuals who had sought to relocate to Britain surfaced on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is this misconception that the Taliban lack the same sort of facilities that we have,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.

During testimony about whether the Taliban possessed necessary encryption, the whistleblower stated: “They've got everything.”

Impact of the Security Lapse

Initial findings presented to the inquiry suggested that approximately fifty kin and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been executed.

A superinjunction regarding the breach was put in force in late 2023 and blocked all details concerning it from public disclosure until recently.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, Person A and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with told Afghan families they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they relocate where feasible and changed their phone numbers. Those were the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained such data, would cause them being traced,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

The source argued that government assessment performed by an ex-government employee had been wrong to state that the acquisition of the information by militant forces was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are in hiding from militant forces; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”

The source explained terrible treatment suffered by at-risk Afghans, involving electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“We have had toddlers who have had bones crushed to force relatives to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
