Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as various looks for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
- Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
Design circles mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
