Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder States Parent Company Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
The co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to personally create this new product as part of a personal series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Between Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain that Unilever and its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen announced through social media how he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, that closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Changes
In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created in 2016 to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated that he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, following many years with the organization, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been undermined following corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
