Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

New York police shared video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
