Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. She has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Steam at Carrington

The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
